Heat Decarbonisation Plans (HDPs)
Working closely with our consortium partners, Caladen Consulting have undertaken over 50 site visits and delivered 25 comprehensive Heat Decarbonisation Plans (HDPs), including providing hands on heating and domestic hot water controls training to every site. Working collaboratively with staff at each school we have already implemented a broad range of no-cost controls optimisation measures that will have an immediate impact on energy consumption, carbon emissions and running costs. In total over 322 interventions have been identified through our work which could deliver an estimated 369MWh of savings per year.

BIM Modelling
Significant progress has been made in delivering Building Information Modeling (BIM) for 25 schools, with on-site surveys completed between November and December 2024. Our team worked efficiently to capture high-quality data while minimising disruption and integrating with the wider project consortium.
We’ve enriched BIM with intelligent data, enabling data-driven decision-making at multiple levels. The data directly informs our capacity analysis, which we’ve conducted in three key areas: net capacity, BB103 compliance, and DfE playing field analysis.
Although the project is ongoing, our structured spatial database is already shaping sustainable school environments, laying the foundation for decarbonisation, operational efficiency, and space optimisation.

Condition Surveys
As schools work towards net zero carbon emissions, understanding building conditions is essential. Condition Surveys assess infrastructure, heating, insulation, and lighting to identify inefficiencies and guide sustainability efforts. They highlight energy inefficiencies, inform upgrades such as insulation and renewable energy, and ensure compliance with evolving regulations. By prioritising cost-effective improvements, schools maximise energy savings and carbon reduction while managing budgets. A comprehensive survey also supports long-term planning for a sustainable future. Ultimately, conducting a Condition Survey is a crucial first step in reducing environmental impact, saving money, and creating a healthier, more efficient learning environment for students and staff. Barker undertook site visits to develop Condition Surveys for each school on the NZAPP.

Manuals
The Caladen team attended each site to deliver one to one training to site managers to improve their understanding of the controls systems within their schools, including a demonstration of the BMS and other controllers whilst also making adjustments to operating times and set point temperatures to optimise system efficiency.
Each visit was then followed up with the issue of a bespoke Operation Manual compiled using manufacturers literature for each of the controllers in use on site, enabling site managers to refer back to the operating instructions in the future should they need to. In addition, the manual also contained a Frequently Asked Questions document that set out some common features of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in order that the site managers could gain a broader understanding of the systems in operation within their schools.
The provision of Operational Manuals therefore provides each school with a valuable resource to help them ensure that the significant savings already being achieved as a result of the training and improved energy awareness continue to be realised in the future.
