Sharing Industry Insights with Young People
As part of our social value commitment to the GB Energy Solar Partnerships (GBESP) programme, the Barker Consortium is delivering a series of green skills and careers awareness activities with participating schools throughout the Spring term 2026.
These activities align with the programme’s energy reduction and decarbonisation objectives and are designed to support careers education around sustainability and the green economy, delivered by our expert industry partners. They include presentations, recordings of workshops and webinars, and resources to complement your school’s existing careers guidance activities.
Barkers
Barkers has developed a PowerPoint presentation aimed at primary school students to introduce and explain the programme. The presentation highlights key renewable technologies, including wind farms, EV charging, and solar PV panels, and how they work together to support a greener planet. It also includes information about Eco-Experts who will visit participating schools to help develop and implement climate action plans. In addition, the presentation explores a range of careers in the green sector, raising awareness among young people about the skills they can develop to pursue future opportunities in sustainable industries.

Place Group & NW Net Zero Hub
On the 1st of April 2026 Place Group & NW Net Zero Hub delivered an interactive assembly at Co-op Belle Vue, introducing students to how schools are reducing energy costs and working towards Net Zero. The presentation highlights that Co-op Belle Vue is expected to save £37,000 through its solar panels, while also significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also covers climate action plans, net zero, and future green skills and career opportunities.

Let’s Go Zero
On Wednesday 4 February 2026, Let’s Go Zero (part of Ashden Climate Change Charity) hosted an interactive online workshop exploring how schools can embed green skills and careers into careers education and the wider curriculum.
The session examined what green skills are, why they are increasingly important for pupils’ future employability, and how schools can support young people to access opportunities within the growing green economy. Participants gained practical guidance, real-world examples and actionable ideas to integrate green skills into teaching, careers programmes and whole-school planning.
The recording is now available for those who were unable to attend or would like to revisit the session.
You can watch the recording here.
Let’s Go Zero
On 23rd April 2026, Let’s Go Zero’s Climate Action Advisors delivered an interactive assembly at Co-op Academy Swinton, focusing on climate action planning in schools. The presentation explores how high daytime electricity use can be reduced through well-placed solar panels, while also highlighting careers in the green industry. It also explains how heavy rainfall and storms in the UK can lead to localised flooding, and how solutions such as sustainable drainage, tree planting, rainwater harvesting, ponds, and green roofs can help mitigate this. In addition, it covers how shading east, south and west-facing classrooms can reduce overheating in summer and lower the need for air conditioning.

Let’s Go Zero
At Woodchurch High School, Let’s Go Zero delivered an interactive presentation to students on the 26th of February, introducing green jobs and skills for future careers, and explored the school’s carbon footprint alongside actions to reduce its environmental impact.
Blue Marble
On Thursday 5th March, Blue Marble hosted an interactive online workshop exploring how protecting water resources can create exciting green career opportunities. Speakers from Blue Marble and Telex Water shared how schools are reducing water consumption through the Great British Energy Solar Partnership (GBESP), why water efficiency is becoming increasingly important due to water scarcity, and the range of sustainability and water-sector careers available to young people.

Amelio
On the 21st & 22nd of April, Amelio delivered interactive Solar PV assemblies at Malvern Primary School and Woodchurch High School. The presentations introduce how energy works, the benefits of renewable energy, and how solar panels generate electricity, while also highlighting career opportunities within the energy sector.

NPS
On the 27th of March NPS delivered an assembly presentation to Cravenwood Primary Academy. The presentation includes an embedded video about solar energy and explores which household appliances use the most energy. It also explains solar energy in child-friendly terms, using relatable comparisons such as Xbox gaming hours and the number of mobile phones that can be charged using energy generated by solar panels.

Plowman & Craven & Class of Your Own
On the 6th of May at Laurus Ryecroft, Plowman & Craven and Class of Your Own delivered an interactive assembly and workshop for students focused on topographic surveys. A topographic survey is a scaled, detailed representation of a site that accurately shows both natural and man-made features, including changes in ground levels. The session also included a practical activity in the school grounds, where students were introduced to survey equipment and learned how it is used to collect real-world measurement data.

Caladen
On the 28th of April, Caladen delivered a BMS optimisation workshop at Tameside College for Level 3 Electrical & Plumbing students. The session explored why energy use matters in schools and colleges, its impact on budgets and carbon emissions, and how smarter management can reduce waste. It also covered key topics such as energy use in buildings, heating systems, smart metering and controls, and the importance of monitoring and behaviour in reducing energy consumption.

Caladen
Caladen produced two pre-recorded videos for primary and secondary students, focusing on heating systems and controls in schools. The videos explain how schools stay warm, how heating is the largest use of energy, and how it can sometimes be wasted. They also highlight how engineers and energy experts help schools become more efficient through smarter building systems. The key message shows that everyone can play a part in saving energy and that small actions alongside smart technology can make schools more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

BSI
On Wednesday 11th March BSI hosted an interactive online workshop and demonstrated how schools can use data and digital tools to better understand their buildings and support their journey towards Net Zero. This included an overview of how data collection has evolved, from basic information gathering to advanced tools such as BIM models, 2D plans, spreadsheets and interactive dashboards, and how these can improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
BSI also highlighted innovative examples, including how some schools have transformed BIM models into interactive Minecraft environments to engage students in a creative way. In addition, the session showcased a range of green career pathways, such as Reality Capture Technician, BIM Technician and School Capacity Consultant, and explored the growing role of IoT in creating smarter, more sustainable buildings.
