The GB Energy Solar Partnerships
A key initiative in the Government drive to reach net zero in education
We are on a mission to support schools and colleges in meeting the net zero challenge and to inspire the next generation to lead the way in climate action.
The Department for Education has launched the Great British Energy Solar Partnerships (GBESP), building on the success of the earlier Net Zero Accelerator pathfinder. This new phase is being delivered by LocatED, the Government’s education property experts, in partnership with the Barker Consortium, a team of sustainability specialists including Barker Associates, Place Group, Let’s Go Zero, Blue Marble, Ginger Energy, and Caladen.
Why we are doing this
The programme will help schools reduce their energy use, cut carbon emissions, and save money by:
Installing clean energy solutions such as solar PV, LED lighting, and smart metering.
Improving building efficiency through better insulation, heating, and controls.
Providing access to cheaper and greener energy.
Supporting staff and students to develop Climate Action Plans, embedding energy-saving behaviours and long-term sustainability practices.
What this means for schools
Overseen by LocatED, GBESP will support 10 schools across the South to:
Enable climate resilience by reducing harmful carbon emissions.
Deliver cost savings by cutting energy consumption.
Reduce inefficiency and waste.
Create shared learning experiences on climate action, linking curriculum and sustainability.
Working in Collaboration
The GB Energy Solar Partnerships is part of the Government’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. It brings together a wide range of national partners, including:
Let’s Go Zero
Climate Ambassadors
The National Education Nature Park
The Sustainability Support for Education Hub
Together, these partners will help schools cut emissions, save energy, and build a greener future.
